Athletic and spirited fourth grader Sakura Kinomoto accidentally sets free the magical cards of Clow Reed, a magician from China. Kerberos, the guardian of the cards, enlists the help of Sakura to gather the Clow cards before they come to life and endanger innocent people. Armed with the Key of the Seal, she calls upon the power of the cards that she captures to gather the remaining cards.

She manages to keep her Cardcaptor identity a secret from her brother Touya and her father Fujitaka. But her best friend Tomoyo Daidouji finds out, who cheerfully volunteers to make Battle Costumes for her and capture her exploits on video. What concerns her the most, though, is how Yukito Tsukishiro, her brother's best friend and her childhood crush, will react if he ever finds out.
